What a dark patch usually tells you
The species people mean, Stachybotrys, is greenish-black and grows on materials with a lot of cellulose — drywall, ceiling tile, paper facing, fiberboard — that stayed wet for a long time. It needs constant moisture. So a dark patch is more often a sign of a leak that ran for weeks than of a storm that came and went. Plenty of other common household molds are dark too. None of that changes the removal.
The honest version of the health story
- CDC says damp, moldy environments may cause stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, wheezing, burning eyes, and skin rash — or nothing at all, depending on the person.
- CDC has not found conclusive evidence linking airborne mold toxins to illness, and says the reported link between this mold and severe illness in infants has not been proven.
- People with asthma or weakened immune systems are at higher risk, and EPA says growth over about ten square feet is a job for a professional.
- Reason enough to remove it. Not a reason to panic.

How the removal goes
The same as any other mold: work area sealed and under negative pressure, wet porous material out and bagged before it leaves the room, framing cleaned in place, HEPA vacuum and wipe-down, and the wood dried before anything is rebuilt. Dark growth on drywall means that drywall comes out. On a ceiling, that section of ceiling comes out. We find where the water came in and tell you what has to change so it doesn’t return.
Slidell notes
Dark growth here most often follows a roof that leaked through a whole season, a supply line inside a wall, or a house that took surge in 2005 and was closed up before the studs were dry. Houses with a dark line along the bottom of a wall years after Katrina are not unusual in Eden Isle or Olde Towne. If one room has never smelled right since, that’s the call.
